Content Marketing
Content marketing is a strategy that goes beyond advertising. It creates valuable and relevant content to attract and retain customers. John Deere was one of the first companies to utilize content marketing. In 1865, Deere began the distribution of a magazine for farmers. Unlike a normal catalogue, however, Deere used The Furrow to educate farmers on new technologies, and how it could help them improve their farms. This magazine was filled with articles and tips written by journalists, engineers, artists, and storytellers about things that farmers really cared about.
The Furrow is still in print today, although it has also adapted to the online landscape by creating a digital version of the magazine, as well as sharing the content on Facebook and Twitter. This publication is the most widely circulated farming magazine in the world, and goes out to 1.5 million farmers in over 40 countries each month. |
175 Years of John Deere
John Deere has a rich history, which is part of why they are so trusted. It is also a true American Dream story of a man pulling himself up by the bootstraps and creating a thriving business from nothing. John Deere left his family in 1836 with just $73 to go West. Deere settled in Illinois and became a blacksmith. Day after day he heard about farmers struggling to pull plows through the midwest mud. Deere came up with a solution, to mold the outside of the plow in steel, and created the first polished plow using the blade of a saw.
175 years later, the company he began is still creating new technologies and coming up with solutions for the hard-working farmers of America.
John Deere appeals to people because it is a family company, born out of the same type of hard work that their customers do every day. Members of the John Deere tribe are proud of the work they do and the machines they do it on.
